tales from atlantis

Greetings from Emelia!

I am on a sampling cruise to the deep sea vents on the Atlantis out of Woods Hole, MA. We are 24 researchers and 30 crew from around the world checking out the microbes down 2500m on the sea floor using ALVIN, the underwater submersible. We will be at sea for 22 days with 14 ALVIN dives. We left Manzanillo, Mexico, (south of Puerto Vallarta) two days ago and arrived at the site this morning. The first ALVIN launch took place at 8:00 AM with two researchers and a pilot. It has been an unforgettable adventure already!

I set up a website that I hope to update daily with pictures and other goodies. The website will be used by the Sara Greenwood Middle School in Dorchester, MA, as part of my NSF fellowship.

The webite is: www.emeliadeforce.com
